Translation
Innocent Angel
Say! Innocent Angel — you,do you want? to leave it all and gowith me… to fly off into the dreams, away from a beauty that strikes even the devil dumb.
Say! And we will flyinto a world of lovely dreams, and in that world we'll findour future in the gaze of hopes.
Say!… or maybe you don't wantto fly with me into the world of beauty? Then stay right here — and you will always belike everything around you: dirty!
About the poem
Three times “Say it!” — an invitation to fly away into dreams, “from beauty where even the devil goes mute.” If the angel refuses, she may stay and become like everything around her: “dirty!” The speaker will go alone, rest from “the reality of being,” and not grieve that she is not there. The poem is a choice offered and withdrawn in the same breath: imagination as refuge, and the pride of preferring it to a world that will not follow. The angel can be read as beloved, ideal or conscience, and the poem gains from not fixing the meaning. Its central tension is between escape into beauty and surrender to the ordinary world. Love appears as an invitation to remain capable of wonder.
