A Real Dream

The hour of sleep had come at last;the moon had climbed the sky and shone.I looked out through the window-glass —and there my gaze stopped: you alone.

It all was like a dream: we two, you, I — together, side by side. But sleep, that night, was gone from methe moment that I saw your eyes.

Those eyes of yours, enchanting, blueas cornflowers in a haze of grey —nowhere on Earth, whichever wayyou search, are eyes like these.

About the poem

The first love poem is a night vision seen through glass. The moon rises, a glance stops on a girl at the window, and her eyes become cornflowers in grey mist, her lips pearls, her hair moonlit and falling to the ground. The wish to see her “without the glass” breaks the spell: the window opens, she is gone, only wind remains. Desire, illusion and the pane between them — the pattern of the whole first section is set here in six rhymed quatrains. What makes the scene persuasive is its refusal to decide whether the girl is real. The poem lets desire create its own evidence, then removes that evidence with the wind, leaving longing intact after the vision disappears.
