Question Mark?
Why take a cigarette in hand? Why breathe in the heavy smoke?Better to eat a tasteless sweet,or go off on holiday with no money to the — for someone — far-off seaside Crimea. Although, perhaps, for someone a cigarette is tastier than a sweet — and it will lay him in the shit. Of course, it may be you smoke your cigarette to discover the unknown for yourself… But don't smoke a lot, Stop. And… Eat a sweet.
About the poem
An anti-smoking poem shaped, on the page, like its own title: the lines drift rightward and curl. Why take a cigarette? Better to eat “a tasteless sweet,” or go on holiday without money to “far-for-someone seaside Crimea.” Perhaps you smoke “to discover the unknown for yourself” — then don’t smoke much, stop, “and eat a sweet.” The coda, for those on a diet, forbids the cigarette as well. Advice with a wink, laid out as a drawing. The visual form is part of the argument. The drifting lines imitate smoke and the bent question mark while the speaker offers deliberately mundane alternatives to the cigarette. Persuasion happens through play: the poem mocks the habit rather than preaching against it.
