Don't Over…
Be for me a musethat sounds like music,in gentle, tender, adjoining notes.
Be for me a flowerthat is an eternal spring;a heady, fragrant scent —be for me a holiday.
Be for me a gamethat carries me away, seethe like a stream of emotion, only don't be a shock.
About the poem
The title breaks off — don’t over- what? — and the poem is a wish-list, each stanza beginning “Be for me”: a muse “sounding like music, in gentle adjacent notes”; a flower of eternal spring; a game that captivates “only not a shock”; a nanny, a toy, a reader of the children’s magazine Malyatko, “because I’m still a little child.” The last request is the only serious one and undoes the rest: “above all, with me, always be yourself.” The musical notes of the first stanza echo the title of the collection. The unfinished title mirrors the poem’s refusal to define the relationship too tightly. Muse, flower, eternity, warmth—each request offers another possible role for the beloved. Desire becomes expansive precisely because no single image can contain what the speaker wants.
