Translation

Bitch

Summer breathed an autumn air;all there was between us twohas quietly and gently gone. The wise sun, past the mountain, threwa dirty gleam in — peering through.

It all began in spring, when the snows had melted;all that was cold flashed by, and the roosters sang.

I met you, and you were like a rose of the wastelands then;and you stank so — and I was from the boozers' brigade.

About the poem

Summer breathes autumn, and a story ends before it is told. The girl was “a rose of the wastelands,” she stank, and when asked why she was drunk she answered in English — “If you want to be okey / Drink a vodka every day” — the couplet preserved in every version. The trochaic sing-song of a folk ballad carries brutal material: pity, disgust, a lie told out of kindness, and a farewell — “fly off, stork.” The title’s spelling, a Russianism in Ukrainian, is the author’s own. The English punch line is not merely shock value; it is a sudden change of register that exposes how little explanation the speaker will receive. The poem turns disgust, attraction and disappointment into the same summer memory, refusing to tidy any of them into a moral.
