Размышление

Мой разум приуныл,Но что же делать?Коль душа моя не знает тела,Что же делать?..

Я здесь сижу, и не знаю почемуМой разум приустал,Да видит Бог, что может потому,Что каждый человек его уже задрал.

Reflection

My reason's grown despondent, but what is there to do?If my soul does not know the body, what is there to do?..

I sit here and don't know whymy reason has grown weary;God knows — maybe becauseeverybody's already worn it out.

About the poem

“My mind is downcast — but what to do?” Two quatrains of comic despair: the soul “does not know the body,” the mind has tired, and God knows why — “maybe because every single person has worn it out.” The slang of the last line lands the joke and keeps the poem from taking its own gloom seriously. Its smallness is part of the design. The poem catches a passing state before it can become philosophy: mind, soul and body are briefly out of alignment, and the speaker answers metaphysical discomfort with a joke. Weariness is acknowledged without being granted grandeur. That tonal modesty keeps the poem human: the speaker is allowed to feel disordered without turning temporary confusion into destiny.
