There are all kinds of people in this World:some people narrower, some people wider;but it's not on the thickness of the bodythat their mind depends, or their wish to think.
About the poem
A four-line joke with a moral: there are “narrower people” and “wider people” in this World, “but it is not on the body’s thickness that their mind and their wish to think depend.” The book’s shortest poem. The joke is compact, but its target is serious: appearances tell us almost nothing about intellectual range. By making “narrow” and “wide” sound physical before reversing them into qualities of mind, the poem exposes the laziness of judging people by surfaces. Its economy sharpens the point: a comic comparison opens into a defense of interior complexity, asking the reader to separate bodily measure from the far less visible measure of thought.
