Translation

The Bird and the Birds

A morning: sunny, spring —it led me out for a walk, gave me a fragrant scent:I rejoiced and sat down on a bench.

I raised my eyes up high,my gaze sailed off into the sky,and there the birds are circling;they need nothing more.

A second time I raised my eyes, and above the natural birdsanother bird was flying by —the one that we created.

About the poem

A spring morning, a bench, and three glances upward. First, birds circling, “needing nothing more.” Second, above the natural birds, “another bird — the one we made.” Third, no birds at all: only “transparent boundlessness,” into which the speaker “flew off in thought.” Nature, machine, mind — three altitudes in four quatrains, and a calm epiphany that the closing poem of the section, O.Rich, will turn into a flight. The second bird—the human-made one—changes the scale of the morning. Nature, technology and imagination share the same sky, yet the poem keeps asking what kind of freedom each possesses. Looking upward becomes a small philosophy of invention and desire.
