Remember

O my happiness, tell me — do you rememberthe first touches and the burning caresses…Have you not forgotten the path you're walking, have you not painted over the colours of love?

O my sun, paint me warmth, blue sky, and space, and freedom;paint the moment that passed into eternity, paint us in red among the grey people.

Bright star among the dark and empty nights, shine and don't go out; know, and rememberthat your light is the life of my eyes;always give me the chance to see.

About the poem

Five apostrophes, each to a different name for the same person: my happiness, my sun, bright star, my feeling, my fate. “Paint me warmth, blue sky, space and freedom… paint us red among the grey people.” Her light is “the life of my eyes”; feeling’s limit is infinity — “you have wings: fly.” The last address is a demand — “Say it!!! Do you no longer know me?” — and the answer, if it comes, is “how silence sings.” An ode in the high style, ending on the collection’s musical note. The repeated imperatives turn memory into an act of painting. Warmth, sky, freedom and redness are not only remembered; they are asked to be recreated. The beloved becomes both subject and artist, someone capable of colouring the emotional world the speaker wants to inhabit.
